The third studio album by pop rock band Cobra Starship, "Hot Mess", is the follow up to their 2007 release "Viva La Cobra!". This album comes off very polished and fun with pieces of brilliance thrown into the mix. Most of the tracks are uptempo, fast, pop rock songs, what you come to expect from Cobra Starship, but there are some slow songs where lead singer, Gabe Saporta, really shows off the amazing voice that he usually keeps hidden under all the "hot mess" on the album. The band tries new styles for the album and they pay off beautifully. The album is a successful pop masterpiece from beginning to end and it shows that people need to start taking the band more seriously from now on.
The album begins with the hand clapping "Nice Guys Finish Last" which starts the quick, nice pace for the entire thing. The song talks about what every guy has come to learn about women: "they wanna bad boy" and nice guys get nowhere with them. It comes off fun with nice beats that will have you singing along. The hilariously titled "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous" has Saporta telling someone to kick his ass while taking on a fast beat, but slowing down towards the end for a little while. The song is nothing special, but does fit in with the rest of the tracklist very well. The two singles of the album, "Good Girls Go Bad feat. Leighton Meester" and the title track, are modern and showcase the theme the band was trying to present the best. They are well-written dance pop songs with the former being the band's first top ten hit single. Stuffed in between the two singles are the two best tracks on the album. "Fold Your Hands Child" and "You're Not In On The Joke" differ from each other severely, but sound right coming out one after another. The first goes off in a new direction for the band which was a surprise to me. The pace is fast, but no where near as fast as the other tracks. It is a gift and I hope to hear more songs like this when they return with their next album. "You're Not In On The Joke" is as fast paced as the album can get with some amazing yelling towards the middle of the track. The song is a hard rock moment tied together with pop perfection that I can not get enough of. One lyric off the track sums up the whole album, "I'm super sweet sealed with a kiss, don't get offended if there's something you missed". The next track, "Living In The Sky With Diamonds", is as close to a ballad as the band has ever come. It is beautifully written, produced, and shows off some of the best vocals of Saporta's career. Some tracks, "Wet Hot American Summer" and "The Scene is Dead; Long Live The Scene", sort of stop the album from hitting its true potential. The tracks feel rushed and I felt that they were not necessary. Good songs, but the band is capable of more. The album comes to a close with the tracks "Move Like You're Gonna Die", a great, upbeat, pop song that will have you dancing, and "The World Will Never Do feat B.o.B", which introduced me to the rapper who is now blowing up the charts. Both songs are excellent in their own different ways and allow the album to finish without every becoming boring. The album is another brilliant pop creation for the band. The album shows off the band's funny side, but gives the listener a glimpse at everything they are capable of. The album is a delight and did not disappoint. Some slight stumbles, but nothing major. An underrated band that will get more exposure from now on.
The album is a fun one, but takes on a serious note with some of the tracks. Cobra Starship has put out some of their best work with this album and can only go up from this point. Track after track the band succeeds by creating some great material. The album will have you singing and dancing along, as well as enjoying the tracks that are a change for the band. The album only contains two "average" tracks and as the cover art suggests, one should expect a party album that will hit them so hard that when they wake up they will not remember what happened. This review is about the standard eleven track edition, but the two bonus tracks, "I May Be Rude, But I'm The Truth" and "Cobras Never Say Die" are songs that need to be listened to as well. Overall the album gets a 87% as the band gets better and better with every album.
