Even though millions and millions of unexpected viewers will be talking and probably scrutinizing Miley Cyrus' raunchy, jaw-dropping, and soon-to-be infamous, performance of her smash hit "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke on last night's MTV Video Music Awards, I cannot get over the news of the former Disney princess releasing a show-stopping ballad as the second offering from her upcoming album, Bangerz. Early Sunday morning, Cyrus treated fans to "Wrecking Ball", a new track that comes off a bit like a moody and depressing Lana Del Rey demo. After releasing one of the hottest songs of the summer, the artist continues to impress and keep everyone guessing with the slow, hard-hitting single which already saw success by reaching the top of the iTunes charts soon after its availability on the music site. P.S. It's much better than the album cover she released along with the new song (no tea, no shade).
"Wrecking Ball" immediately shows a different side of the new party girl. With its melodramatic progression and simple, piano-driven production, the new single may immediately become my favorite creation from the pop singer. Cyrus has been known for her previous ballads, ones that I felt her voice was too weak to get across effectively, but here her vocals work for the better. The well-written, emotion-filled verses lead up to a nice chorus where the artist screams that she is not to blame for the end of a relationship. "Don't you ever say, I just walked away, I will always want you", she sings in what may be my favorite kiss off of 2013.
Cyrus' image has changed dramatically, her VMA performance has cemented that fact, but I won't focus on that if this is the music I am to expect from Bangerz. "Wrecking Ball" is sure to be a highlight off the new project with the spotlight shining down on Cyrus' improved vocal performance and heartfelt songwriting which really takes the new song to an entirely different level. Hopefully, the track becomes the album's official second single and becomes the hit it deserves to be. I could be speaking immense praise for the piece as I've become somewhat of a Miley fanatic, or because I can relate to every word being sung by the female pop star, but whatever the reason, it's hit a chord with me. Bravo, twerk queen!
