Their last studio album may not have gotten off the ground like they had hoped, but the Jonas Brothers are all still moving forward as youngest brother Nick unleashes another solo single in preparation for the upcoming release of his official sophomore album. "Jealous" is a contemporary R&B effort which showcases Jonas' impressive vocal abilities as he sings of being hung up on his former lover.
While original lead offering "Chains" was a decent cut from the artist, one which came and went without much promotion, the new single is a better way to kick things off and give listeners a taste of what to expect from the upcoming album. Instead of the typical pop project, Nick is ready to dish out music with meaning and highlight his love for musicianship and story-telling songwriting.
"Jealous" does not only dip its feet in the R&B genre territory, but also contains some funky, 80s-inspired influences as Nick glides effortlessly across some infectious mid-tempo beats that would sound refreshing on the radio airwaves. "Cause you're too sexy, beautiful and everybody wants a taste, that's why I still get jealous," Jonas croons on a chorus that will certainly stay stuck in your head even when the nearly four-minute track unfortunately comes to an end. Comparisons to Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake's sound and style will be made, however, Nick makes the song his own.
Nick Jonas is certainly proving himself to be a capable solo artist now that the Jonas Brothers have peacefully parted ways. "Jealous" is an excellent release, showcasing an impressive set of pipes, playful genre experimentation, crossover potential and maturity. Hopefully the single release will be handled a bit differently this time around because this soulful track deserves vast radio attention in the coming months.
UPDATE: To further promote the catchy single, a recent Top 40 hit for Jonas, the artist has teamed up with R&B sensation Tinashe for a new seductive remix which highlights the chemistry between the two. Listen!
